Meyer Sound PANTHER Blooms in First Show of Dead & Company 2022 U.S. Tour

Author:

Dead & Company's 2022 Summer Tour kicked off at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in mid-June, continuing the tradition of its predecessor, Grateful Dead, using the latest innovative sound reinforcement technology with a sound reinforcement system made up of Meyer Sound's new large linear line array speakers. The band further expanded its already rich repertoire, while UltraSound (who has been the audio equipment supplier for Grateful Dead and Dead & Company for decades) deployed the largest PANTHER speaker system in North America and was first used on a national tour.

In order to cover the vast audience areas in stadiums and large performance venues, the UltraSound provides a PANTHER inventory sufficient for systematic configuration according to different venue sizes. For a stadium, a typical sound reinforcement system is configured with four identical arrays-two sets of front main expanders and two sets of side supplements. Each array consists of 16 PANHTER speakers, the upper part is divided into 12 PANTHER-L long-distance projection types, and the lower part is matched with 4 PANTHER-W wide coverage types.

FOH mixer Derek is Featherstone responsible for the tuning of the first show of the PANTHER North American tour. He is also the general director and UltraSound CEO of the tour.

Featherstone commented: "PANTHER is a responsive system that responds quickly to change. The system highlights the vocals very well. Compared with last year's system, it can make the vocals better presented in the mix. I made some changes to the vocal compression process to take advantage of this performance advantage. In addition, there is a general consensus that less EQ is required for PANTHER, so the system is optimized faster, and even in the stadium we don't need to enhance the high frequency too much, while revealing the details of the sound."

Although the PANTHER speaker weighs only 68kg, the maximum sound pressure level it produces can still exceed 150 dB. The compact size and lightweight cabinet save on transportation costs, while the new Class D amplifier significantly reduces power consumption. PANTHER is the first box that can be used directly with AVB Milan™Network protocol connected line array system.

As tour leader, Featherstone appreciates the flexibility of the PANTHER's power-to-size-weight ratio.

He said: "We used the same number of PANTHER as last year's LEO, but the reduction in size and weight enabled us to carry more ultra-low frequency speakers and deploy the assembly more efficiently. We could use additional truck space to install VLFC speakers, and the lightweight PANTHER enabled us to easily hang more ultra-low frequency arrays in the stadium under the same total weight limit."

For the sound reinforcement system in a larger site, we are equipped with 18 hanging 1100-LFC low-frequency speakers plus 12 700-HP high-power ultra-low-frequency speakers placed on the ground to assist the PANTHER array to enhance the bass effect. 10 VLFC low-frequency speakers extend the frequency response to the infrasound level of 13Hz, and 12 LEOPARD compact line array speakers are installed for front-end sound supplement. In addition, it is equipped with 8 GALAXY network platform processors to provide system drive and optimization. The stage feedback system consists of 10 MJF-210 and 2 MJF-212A stage monitor speakers, 2 JM-1P speakers used as side complement sound and 2 1100-LFC speakers used to enhance drum set monitoring low frequency.

Featherstone said, "We invested in PANTHER for three reasons-we needed additional inventory, we were confident that the high fidelity of the Meyer Sound speaker would deliver the desired results, and we would benefit from the added versatility of the product. The Dead & Company tour will end next month, and now we 've been greatly favored by other tours and shows."

The band's 2022 tour is heading east, with 20 shows planned in 16 cities and will end July 16 at Citi Field in New York. The tour includes four Major League Baseball stadiums, one NFL stadium and one college football stadium, while other venues are major performance venues.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 by Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir, then Grateful Dead, teamed up with art and musician John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, bass player of Allman Brothers, and Jeff Chimenti, keyboardist of Fare Thee Well and RatDog, and quickly became one of the most successful touring bands.

Since its inception, the band has completed six tours, performed for millions of fans, and broke the record for attendance at a historic concert at Wrigley Field, becoming a record-holding stadium performance to this day. Dead & Company has been touring since their debut in 2015, grossing $0.3 billion and selling more than 3 million tickets at 172 reported shows.
